The strategic decision made by co-curators Charles Esche and Vasif Kortun, to withdraw the trajectory of the 9th Istanbul Biennial from the city's historical peninsula and instead focus on Istanbul's most 'western' modernized quarters, saved the biennial from the tedium of folklore, exoticization and orientalist kitsch that has crippled some of the biennial's previous editions. This desire to address the city as a global city and post modern metropolis provided the critical impetus for this issue of AS, a visual culture/theory journal published by MuHKA in Antwerp.
