In the summer of 1994, Chilean-born Alfredo Jaar travelled to Rwanda as the genocide that ultimately took the lives of over a million Tutsis and uncooperative Hutus was underway. Appalled by the atrocities being committed and the apparent apathy of the international community, Jaar created a series of public artworks in an effort to direct attention to the killings and to the West’s silent complicity. This book features documentation of these artworks as well as photographs and gallery installations exhibited in the aftermath of the genocide. Jaar’s photographic work attempts to counter and transform the conventions of photojournalism, which tends to objectify violence thorough unmediated images of victimization. Instead, Jaar chooses to portray the desolate beauty of the Rwandan landscape and the eyes of the people who bore witness to the horror that was allowed to unfold there. With texts (in English) by Ben Okri and David Levi Strauss
