The statue is an ode to the first and one of the most important peace activists in modern history. Because of her dedication and influence, Von Suttner was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905.

The statue of Von Suttner is a gift from the Carnegie Foundation to the city of The Hague and its visitors, originally created to mark the 100th anniversary of the Peace Palace in 2013. After 12 years, the artwork will now be given a permanent place in front of the Peace Palace. The Bertha von Suttner Peace Prize will also be awarded on 10 December.
